Executive Director 

The Family Focused Treatment Association (FFTA), a national non-profit association of 470 treatment family care agencies, is conducting a search for an Executive Director who can lead and grow this premier organization. If you are a forward thinker capable of building strong relationships with members, strategic partners and staff; this may be the position for you! This is the first time in 32 years the organization has sought an Executive Director. It is a critical and exciting opportunity for the organization and for the new Executive Director.

Function of the Executive Director:

The new Executive Director will bring to this position strong leadership, a commitment to advancing the interest and priorities of the membership, and a future oriented vision for how to enhance services and grow membership. Relocation will not be required.

Position Description


The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors and is responsible to the Board for program effectiveness and the organizational and financial health of FFTA. The Executive Director presides over all FFTA advocacy, administration, member services and executive support activities, supervises all FFTA staff/contracts, and oversees all business support and investment functions.



  • Provide consistent, forward thinking leadership to FFTA and its member agencies in public policy, advocacy, member services, executive support and organizational development.
  • Listen to member agency chief executives and senior staff in order to understand the issues important to them and effectively act on them.
  • With the Board of Directors, engage in annual review and long-term strategic planning for the organization and oversee strategic plan implementation.
  • Assure FFTA is fiscally healthy, effectively managed, and transparent and ethical in its financial and business dealings.


  • Develop/oversee legislative strategy, preparation of advocacy material and submit to board for approval.
  • Develop/oversee policy positions for other current issues, prepare written presentation material and submit to board for approval.
  • Develop relationships with state and national organizations involved in child welfare issues. Track relevant federal legislation and funding changes.
  • Maintain and enhance the Organizations’ reputation as the “go to” expert on family focused treatment issues.

Executive Support

  • Oversee planning of member conferences.
  • Oversee consultants and contracts.
  • Develop and approve contracts with outside vendors and other professional organizations.
  • Oversee the development of new members and maintain relationships with current members.
  • Represent FFTA at selected member events.


  • Assure full communication to members regarding progress of public policy agenda through e-newsletter, emails, webinars and conference calls, and workgroups, as appropriate.
  • Speak at membership conferences and other member related conferences.
  • Oversee development and utilization of website, Facebook page and other e-venues.
  • Act as the voice and face of FFTA to external groups and the media.
  • Assure media are utilized to best advantage to advance FFTA agenda.

Strategic Partnerships

  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with representatives of the Administration, state agencies, the Legislature, and other governmental bodies.
  • Build and maintain positive working partnerships with representatives of advocacy groups, philanthropic organizations, and other entities with allied interests.
  • Represent FFTA in formal and informal advocacy groups focused on FFTA public policy issues
  • Build and maintain productive alliances with national advocacy organizations and accrediting bodies.

Management and Staffing

Oversee the management contract to ensure the following:
  • Develops and maintains sound financial practices and fiscally responsible budgeting processes;
  • Works with the staff, Executive Committee, and the Board in preparing a budget; sees that the organization operates within budget guidelines;
  • Maintains official records and documents, and ensures compliance with Federal, State and local regulations and reporting requirements (such as annual audits and tax returns; payroll withholding and reporting, etc.).
  • Assure organization has talented, skilled staff and consultants who completely, cheerfully and competently carry out the mission of FFTA. .
  • Effectively manages personnel;
  • Ensures that job descriptions are developed, and that regular performance evaluations are held and documented;
  • Divides and assigns work effectively, delegating appropriate levels of freedom and authority.

Support and Work with the Board of Directors

  • Work with board committee to identify potential board members and board leadership.
  • Keep the Board informed about issues and events which might impact the Organizations.



  • Significant and sustained leadership experience in related public policy areas or as a chief executive in the field.
  • Experience in an association setting preferred.

Personal Qualifications

  • Highly organized, self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Team player who enjoys working collaboratively with FFTA staff, representatives of other advocacy groups, and members of the Legislature and staff.
  • “Quick study”, with demonstrated capacity to absorb complex issues, organize effective strategy and effectively carry the strategy to completion.
  • Willing and able to work with multiple member committees to effect policy change through governmental processes.
  • Personable and engaging, responsive to member inquiries and concerns.
  • Good writing skills with demonstrated experience conveying key messages clearly, timely and succinctly.


  • Bachelor degree required.
  • Advanced degree preferred.
