FFTA Endorses Mental Health Practice Guidelines for Child Welfare
In October 2007, experts in the fields of child welfare and mental health research, policy and services and parent and youth child welfare advocates met in Alexandria , Virginia for the Best Practices for Mental Health in Child Welfare Consensus Conference. This conference, sponsored by Casey Family Programs, the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the REACH Institute (Resource for Advancing Children's Health), aimed to develop best practice guidelines for addressing mental health in child welfare by focusing on five key areas- mental health screening and assessment, psychosocial interventions, psychopharmacological interventions, parent support and empowerment, and youth support and empowerment.
During the conference critical papers on these topic areas were presented and participants engaged in a consensus process to develop guidelines in each of the areas. As a result of the conference, a total of 32 guidelines were developed.
As the leader in Treatment Foster Care, FFTA was asked to endorse these Guidelines. We are pleased to join other national child welfare and mental health research, policy, and services organizations to endorse these Guidelines. FFTA encourages TFC agencies to consider how to incorporate these guidelines in their programs where appropriate.
