Legislators

Now that you know who your legislators are, take the opportunity to contact them. Invite them out to your agency and show them around. Get to know them prior to the beginning of the legislative session if possible, when your legislators will have more time. Encourage them to interact in the daily activities of the agency, rather than…or in combination with any “official” ceremony that day. Informal talk with “real” kids and families will go a long way toward making your agency “real” in their mind. When a bill comes up you feel strongly about, they will not be able to dismiss it as easily if they have seen the “real” people it would affect. Once they have visited your agency, they will have a better sense of your needs and the “picture” left in their mind will be worth 1000 words.
